Wat Maha Pruettharam (Wat Takian)

The History of Wat Maha Pruettharam

Wat Maha Pruettharam Worawihan is an old temple in the Bang Rak area of Bangkok, believed to have been founded in the late Ayutthaya period. It was first known as Wat Tha Kwian because the area was a stop for traders and travelers using ox carts, and later called Wat Takien due to the many takien trees nearby. In the reign of King Rama IV during the early Rattanakosin period, the temple was renovated and upgraded to a royal monastery (worawihan). The king also renamed it “Wat Maha Pruettharam,” a name that refers to a highly respected senior monk, showing the temple’s religious importance. Today, it is known for its historic ordination hall, traditional Thai architecture, and mural paintings that reflect early Rattanakosin art.

The Role of Temples in Bangkok’s Canal Trade Network

Wat Maha Pruettharam Worawihan was once part of a canal-based community in early Bangkok, where waterways were the main routes for transportation and trade. Although it was not a floating market itself, the temple was located near important canals that supported small-scale boat trading and daily life. People used boats to sell food, goods, and supplies, and temples like this often became community centers where locals gathered, made merit, and exchanged goods. Over time, as Bangkok developed into a modern city with roads and buildings, the role of canals decreased, but the temple still reflects the historical connection between religion, community life, and water-based trade.
